MAPP Blog sept 2019

I have joined Middlesex University as a director, choreographer, professional dancer, studio and production company owner. When voicing my interest to the individuals within my circle, felt this was not the path for me. After the introduction today I am more than justified in my reasoning for joining. I have a thrust for knowledge and keen to engage with others, hearing their opinions and thoughts. I am excited to be inspired by you all.

I have had a glittering career within musical theatre and professional dance, I am proud I am a member of several associations of dance and have worked my way for the past fifteen years to grow reputation and qualifications. Motherhood was a new and exciting journey for me one which until 2016 I was able to share with my other daughters ( I have four daughters ages five, four, three, one).

My third daughter Darcey was born with a rare genetic disease called Kleefstra Syndrome and hit double with another called Rett syndrome. (they make for an interesting read so do look them up) my life was turned up side down. How could I deal with this, my life was about movement and performance and I have this little girl who could not hear , understand , walk or communicate with me, on top of the severe autism, self mutilation and sever learning disability . Darcey has broken me and also built me back up into the person I am now.

I have had to change my perception of dance, how to teach and dedicated my time to develop key syllabus just for these amazing children. Darcey is my reason for being here at Middlesex. I want to further my skills, my research and allow every child just like her with a severe disability the chance to dance.

I was most excited today to understand how the library works, great resources and easy to navigate which helps me a lot as I am not very good with technology.

With a big leap of faith I throw myself into this study and I am excited to share with you all and see how my learning , professional practice and indeed myself may change along the way.
